Business rate review welcomed - good news for the High Street

The comprehensive review of Business Rates announced by the Liberal Democrat, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander has has been welcomed by local councillors and businesses.

Former MP and Teignmouth County Councillor, Richard Younger-Ross, said that "The review of business rates is long overdue. Small local businesses are struggling as large national and multi-national companies dominate the retail sector. But our communities need active and vibrant High Streets and the best way to make that happen is to help a variety of small retailers establish themselves and flourish.

"Large chains have their place in attracting shoppers to a town but they must not be the only act on the High Street.

"The Government is helping small business by reducing Business Rates to £1,500 for shops with a rateable value of up £50,000 from next year. The Lib Dems recognise that more needs to be done and the review should set in place a fairer system for our retailers."
