24 Mar 2010

Richard Younger-Ross, MP for Teignbridge in South Devon has condemned the Chancellor's budget statement to increase cider duty by a massive 10%.

"This will have a very damaging effect on the industry" he said. "it is a tax which attacks small craft cider makers and many of them will now be faced with a very uncertain future."

He continued, "To tackle anti social behaviour we need a minimum price per unit of alcohol which will force up the price of low cost ciders and will not affect and damage the small cider makers in Devon. It would protect the future of Newton Abbot's cider bar which is only one of four left in the country."
