The price of fuel in rural areas may be cut by 5p litre after the European Commission approved UK plans.

Those living in Devon, North Yorkshire, Cumbria and the Scottish Highlands will benefit from the fuel rebate scheme.

Former MP and fuel duty campaigner Richard Younger Ross said "This is great news for motorists and brings a duty discount on fuel a stage closer. The Commission's decision now requires the approval of other European countries so we are not there yet but this is a massive step forward. Cars are essential in rural areas but fuel costs in rural areas are higher than in urban areas. This discount will help redress this imbalance. We have been campaigning for this for over 15 years, such measures are essential to keep our rural areas alive."

Danny Alexander Chief Secretary to the Treasury said "As someone who comes from one of the most rural areas in the UK, I know that for people who live in these areas cars are a necessity, not a luxury."

Mr Alexander said: "While we have one more stage to go, I want to make sure we are ready to implement this as a top priority, so we will press for this to be heard as soon as possible and are today publishing the necessary draft regulations.

"I'm determined to implement the Rural Fuel Rebate in the current Parliament as part of this Government's drive for a stronger economy and fairer society."
