Violent crime in Devon and Torbay is on the rise.
Violent crime in Devon and Torbay is on the rise.
Figures published today by Public Health England show a 20 per cent rise in violent crime in Devon over the last three years and an increase of nearly 30 percent in Torbay. The rise in violent crime in these authorities is in sharp contrast to the figures for England that show a fall of 10 per cent.
Commenting on the figures, County Councillor Richard Younger-Ross, the former MP for Teignbridge said,
"These figures are very disturbing; violent crime in the England is falling but in Devon it is rising.
"We need to know what the local issues are that are causing this increase. What are are the Councils and Police doing to combat this rise? Have the changes locally been brought about by a reduction in Bobbies on the beat?
"The Police and Crime Commissioner, Tony Hogg needs to explain what he is going to do to nip this increase in the bud. I have written to the Home Secretary, Teresa May, and asked her to look into this."
